Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is known for its centuries-old architecture and a rich culture with Southeast Asian, Chinese and French influences. At its heart is the chaotic Old Quarter, where the narrow streets are roughly arranged by trade. There are many little temples, including Bach Ma, honoring a legendary horse, plus Đồng Xuân Market, selling household goods and street food.

Hạ Long Bay, in northeast Vietnam, is known for its emerald waters and thousands of towering limestone islands topped by rainforests. Junk boat tours and sea kayak expeditions take visitors past islands named for their shapes, including Stone Dog and Teapot islets. Nha Trang is a coastal resort city in southern Vietnam known for its beaches, diving sites and offshore islands. Its main beach is a long, curving stretch along Tran Phu Street backed by a promenade, hotels and seafood restaurants. Aerial cable cars cross over to Hòn Tre Island, and the nature reserves of Hòn Mun and Hòn Tằm islands, reachable by boat, have coral reefs.

Ho Chi Minh City, also known by its former name Saigon, is the largest city in Vietnam. Situated in the south, and in the southeastern region, the city straddles the Saigon River and covers about 2,095 km². The name Saigon is still frequently used.

DAY 1

Arrival at Hanoi

Arriving at Noi Bai airport in Hanoi, you’ll be met and driven to your hotel. You’ll have time to relax after your journey before having tickets for a performance of traditional Water Puppetry, an art form unique to northern Vietnam, and a good, light-hearted introduction to its rural culture. You’ll spend the night in Hanoi.

DAY 2

Hanoi orientation city tour (B)

You’ll have the whole day to explore Vietnam’s capital city. Your guide will take you to the Temple of Literature, the first university in Vietnam dating back to the 11th century, and a popular attraction, as is Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, his simple stilt house where he lived and worked, and the museum dedicated to his memory. Afternoon, you’ll call in at the serene Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest in Hanoi, on the banks of Hanoi’s Ho Tay (West) Lake. The center of Hanoi, including Hoan Kiem Lake, the Ngoc Son temple and the bustling Old Quarter, is a magnet for visitors – it’s noisy and hectic, but definitely a ‘must-see’ attraction. The Old Quarter is a maze of shopping streets and restaurants with a hotchpotch of architecture - traditional tube houses, religious buildings, artisans’ workshops and cottages, colonial houses and modern concrete edifices. You’ll spend the night in Hanoi. You might like to consider the following alternatives for your day in Hanoi (not included in the program) The Hoa Lo Prison – better known by captured US pilots as the ‘Hanoi Hilton’ The History, Fine Arts and Vietnam Military History Museum [formerly Army Museum] – large, but many interesting exhibits The Women’s Museum – small, but a fascinating narrative of the role of women in Vietnam, particularly during the war The Hanoi Citadel: This former residence of the royalty of Vietnam was used between 1010 and 1810. Most of the structure that makes up the citadel was destroyed by the French in the 19th century, but the gate, steps, Princess's Palace and Hanoi Flag Tower still exist. You can now visit a few of the buildings, which were kept guarded from visitors for centuries. It’s newly recognised as a World Heritage Site. The Dong Xuan, Hang Be or Hom markets – large, crowded, but very Vietnamese St. Joseph’s Cathedral – European neo-Gothic (plenty of up-market shops and restaurants nearby)

DAY 3

Hanoi/Ha Long (B, L, D)

Note: Hanoi – Halong – Hanoi by cruise shuttle bus After an early breakfast, you’ll leave for Ha Long Bay, one of the most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Areas and the world’s largest marine limestone ‘karst’ landscape. There you’ll board your boat, a wooden junk built from the model of the old Vietnamese court vessels with sails, a wide transom and rectangular superstructure, that will take you first to the busy World Heritage area and then to some of the less well-known grottos and caves. Weather permitting, you’ll be able to swim, fish, climb a hill (not a mountain!) for an overview of the Bay’s remarkable seascape, or venture into some of the sea level caves in a small sampan. All your meals will be provided on board, usually based on fresh seafood, and you’ll sleep in a twin cabin with an en suite toilet and shower. For your two-day HaLong excursion, you'll board one of the superior quality boats on the Bay, a wooden junk based on the model of the old Vietnamese court vessels with sails, a wide transom and rectangular superstructure. The boats vary in size, accommodating between ten and eighteen people, so you're likely to be joining other travelers for the cruise. Your cabin will be about six meters square, and furnished with twin bunks, two fans, an air-conditioner, pillows, white cotton sheets, and an en suite toilet and shower. All your meals, usually based on fresh seafood, will be provided on board.

DAY 4

Ha Long/Hanoi/Danang/Hoi An (B, brunch)

You’ll spend the morning cruising Ha Long Bay, followed by lunch just before docking around around 10.30am, then you’ll leave for Hanoi Upon arrival at Hanoi city, take ahead to Noi Bai airport for the flight to Danang then ahead to Hoi An town for overnight stay. When you arrive, you’ll be met by our guide and driven to your hotel to check in. You’ll spend the night in Hoi An.

DAY 5

Hoi An half day tour/Thu Bon River Boat Trip (B)

After breakfast, your guide will meet you to show you the Ancient Town and explain its considerable significance in the history of Vietnam when you visit 400 years old Japanese bridges, 300 years old Chinese temples, and 200 years old Vietnamese former merchants' houses. Afternoon, you’ll take a boat trip on the Thu Bon River to visit Cam Kim wood village and Thanh Ha pottery village

DAY 6

Hoi An/Danang/Bana Hills and the Golden Bridge/ Hoi An (B)

After breakfast, your guide and car will bring you to Bana Hills in Danang. The Ba Na Hills mountain resort is a wonderful mix of surreal fun and classic beauty — the perfect place for you and your family to escape the heat. You will take The cable car ride up to the Ba Na Hills, have time to experience the Funicular train, see the Le Jardin D’Amour, the newly built Golden Bridge and the Giant Buddha Statue. Your ticket also includes entrances to games in the Fantasy Park if you feel interested (it is great for children). Note: Your tour guide will wait for you at the entrance gate of Bana hills, not join you in the cable car and to the mountain to save the cost. After Ba Na, you will arrive in Hoi An in the afternoon. You’ll spend the night in Hoi An.

DAY 7

Hoi An/Nha Trang (B)

After breakfast, you’ll be free until your car arrives to take you to the airport for the noon flight to Nha Trang. On arrival, you’ll find a car and driver waiting to take you to your hotel, which will overlook the Bay.

DAY 9

Nha Trang/Ho Chi Minh City (B)

You’ll be free until your car and driver take you to Cam Ranh Airport in the afternoon for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Arriving at Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh City, you’ll be met and driven to your hotel for overnight stay.

DAY 10

Ho Chi Minh City & Cu Chi Tunnels (B)

After breakfast, your guide will arrive to show you around Ho Chi Minh City. You will visit the Reunification Hall, an early colonial masterpiece constructed to accommodate the Governor –general of Indochina; the Museum of War Remnants provides a very partial, but riveting, perspective of the ‘American War’; The Binh Tay market which also called Cho Lon and the China Town are worth a stroll to explore the local daily life and the culture mix. After lunch, you will visit the famous Cu Chi Tunnels, a Byzantine maze of underground passages, chambers, rooms and booby traps used by both the Vietminh and the Viet Cong to suddenly materialize as if from nowhere, launch a lightning ambush, and vanish equally rapidly. Late afternoon, you’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City and the evening will be your own. You’ll spend the night in Ho Chi Minh City.

DAY 11

Ho Chi Minh City departure (B)
